Latest Update: June 28, 2020: Over 10,000,000 individuals infected worldwide and more than 500,000 people have lost their lives due to COVID-19 so far. (Source)
At this time, prevention is the ONLY cure. A vaccine for COVID 19 is not yet available. Do not panic and there is no need to stock up on face-masks and hand-sanitizers. Here are few things you can do to prevent COVID 19 infection:
The WHO along with the ICTV (International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses) have declared that the official name of the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease is SARS-COV-2 virus (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus 2). Remember, COVID-19 is the official name of the disease that is caused by the SARS-COV-2 virus, and it was earlier known as the 2019 Novel Coronavirus disease.
This virus is part of the coronavirus family and gets its name from the Latin word 'corona' which means Halo or Crown. The new coronavirus is called nCoV-2019 and is considered to have its origins in the Chinese city of Wuhan and endangers the lives of thousands of people in over 30 countries worldwide. The coronavirus can mutate easily and has the potential to be transmitted from animals to humans as well as from humans to humans.
There are a number of strains of the coronavirus and seven such strains have been identified and confirmed to infect human beings. Two types of coronaviruses have been known to be particularly deadly to humans. These two are the SARS and MERS coronaviruses. While SARS stands for Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome, MERS stands for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. This one is called nCoV-2019 and scientists are still trying to get to know more about this virus. Intially, animals like pigs, bats and other smaller mammals were infected, but now it is also impacting humans.
After the outbreak of the SARS epidemic a couple of decades ago scientists discovered many related virus and they are known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome related Coronaviruses or SARSr-CoV. These viruses have the capacity to infect human beings and are usually found in bats which are considered to be their natural carrier. The virus we are discussing today is a novel coronavirus called nCoV-2019. It is so named because the epidemic started from December 2019. The Chinese authorities have obtained the full genome sequences of the nCoV-2019 coronavirus and it was seen that these virus share close to 80% of their sequence with the SARS-CoV and almost 90% of their sequence with a bat coronavirus.
The number of people getting infected with the nCoV-2019 coronavirus is growing expontially with every passing day and at the time of writing this article, that number is said to be upwards of 20,000 and fast climbing. Over 500 people are said to have died in China alone due to this coronavirus. The number of fatalities arising out of this infection in other countries is also rising steadily.
The coronavirus appears to be less deadly than the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) virus. The nCoV-2019 coronavirus infects the lower respiratory tract. Initially, patients develop a common cold, running nose, cough, aches and sore throat. Progressively and rapidly, they develop more severe symptoms like shortness of breath or symptoms of pneumonia. Some patients become only mildly ill and symptoms may appear within 2 days to 14 days after exposure to the virus.
Other symptoms include difficulty breathing, fever and cough but there are also cases of non-respiratory symptoms such as diarrhea and nausea or vomiting. People with a weakened immune system may develop upper respiratory tract illnesses or more serious infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis. People of all ages can be infected but older and people with pre-existing medical conditions are thought to be more prone to this new virus. The overall median age of cases is 45 to 60 years.
According to the WHO, this coronavirus infection causes breathing difficulties, cough, fever and/or shortness of breath. In more severe cases, it can lead to death after having symptoms like pneumonia and kidney failure. While it is yet to be discovered how the virus spread, the CDC says the coronaviruses are mostly spread through human-to-human contact and others such as:
As the number of people infected or dead because of the new Chinese coronavirus nCoV-2019 continues to rise with every passing hour, there is growing concern worldwide and frantic efforts are on to contain the virus and find a cure for the viral pneumonia caused by it. At the moment, not much is known about the new coronavirus and scientists are racing against time to answer key questions related to the virus and the conditions caused as a result of being infected by it. This strain of coronavirus appears to infect more people but kills less of them. Compared to the SARS coronavirus which had a death rate of about 10% the novel coronavirus, nCoV-2-19 appears to have a fatality rate of about 2%. But there is a lot yet to be learnt about how the virus infection spreads among humans and why some individuals do not show any symptoms inspite of being infected by the virus. While it was considered to infect mostly adults in the 45 to 60 age group, it has now been found to infect even infants as young as 30 days old.
Coronaviruses cause common cold and pneumonia and affect animals and humans. They also cause severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Coronaviruses that affect humans are called Human Coronaviruses or HCoV. OC43 and 229E are two such HCoVs that infect humans. There is currently no known cure or vaccine for the novel Chinese coronavirus, but it is believed that some Thai doctors treated one of their patients with a combination of antiviral drugs and had good results.
In case an individual has symptoms of the virus, it is possible to get lab tests done that can confirm if it is caused by a coronavirus. In case of an infection there should be no problem unless the infection spreads to the lower respiratory tract in the event of which it can cause pneumonia. Individuals with a weaker immune system or pre-existing illnesses such as diabetes, heart conditions etc. are more susceptible to the disease.
Common cold in humans is caused by coronaviruses as well as rhinoviruses. While rhinoviruses can be easily cultured in a laboratory, that is not the case when it comes to the human coronaviruses. This is one of the reasons why it has not been possible to guage the full impact of the virus on human health and economy.
